QA Testing before a website goes LIVE – We should be using 404 redirected, the plug-in for wordpress

Testing isn’t fun, I am going to be honest. I have to go through the entire site and make sure all links and buttons are in working order. I have found 404 error pages that leave a site sort of ‘broken’ and this is not good for google/SEO etc. So I found http://wordpress.org/plugins/404-redirected/ We should use this as a standard plug-in. Why not? Need to know thoughts here. Won’t this save us time? Testing must be accounted for in the Standard Timeline – it is TIME consuming – link, bugs, and more fixing adds up so we can discuss this more in workshops and in the overall schedule, budget and resource allocation.

Fast Action Bonus Reminder – $50 Theme purchase for free

Had a client remind me of this today, folks….anyone who signed up by a certain date got up to a $50 theme for free. Becky has pointed out that all of this recent wave of clients did receive the perk.

    Thanks

    DB

    Workshop: Standard timeline for projects

I’d like to put a scheduled timeline to our STWP projects.

There are tasks in each of our projects that we can control (such as getting the development environment set up), and then other tasks that are under the client’s control (theme choice, content creation–IF they are the ones creating it).

In all the client engagements I’ve managed at IBM, there was a project plan that had due dates for each task. Did we always make it? No. Did we get it done faster and with less cost because there was an expectation that we’d hit those dates? Yes.

Most of us respond better to a timeline, and our clients will, too. If we lay out a schedule clearly, and let them know when each of their tasks are DUE, we will get better response from them.

I’d like for us to hold a workshop where we put a schedule in place for the entire standard project. We’ll choose a fictitious start date (like Jan 15th) and then determine all other dates from there. This will be added to the project template so that you can enter a real date for a kickoff meeting and then everything will flow from there.

This schedule can then be the basis for setting client expectations after the kickoff meeting.

    Thoughts?

In the template currently on LGED can we input estimated time to tasks before this workshop – if so, how can i do it? When I enter tasks currently (the old school CW way) I always put in an estimated time guideline for the developer. If this has already been done, where can I see it because when I look at the template currently it lists tasks not yet categorized. Still learning …..

I’m not sure. Can you ask Meagan? Maybe the two of you can put your heads together and see if it can be done.

Hi All, im trying to set up this elasticemail/mailpoet thing in one of the sites, and its not that im lazy on reading the docs from their site, but im sure you already have a 1,2,3 step procedure to do it. Help! 😀

Juan – do you mean configuring it on the site, itself?

      • Juan Villegas 9:28 pm on November 25, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I have installed Wysija, and im trying to configure it to send emails using Elasticemail.com’s smtp server. The docs suggest validating domains using DKIM and SPF validation, but im unsure if thats how you usually do it

Okay, you’re beyond my capabilities. I thought you just put the elasticemail account in the wysija configuration and you were good.

Look in either DrSarahAllen.com or RutieHavazelet.com and see how it’s done there.

PC – Please add task to your current STWP projects template on LGED

Please add the following task to your current project templates for the STWP on LGED – it needs to go under the “Go Live” Category and it needs to be assigned to the Developer.

“Go to go to http://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/ and use the script to replace the dev site with then new site URL.”

what is this and do we still need to do this if we are already doing a 301 redirect. can someone please clarify. i am ready to go live for a client and need to be more clear on what this is.

    • Becky DeGrossa 5:00 pm on January 14, 2014 Permalink | Log in to Reply

This is a tool the renames dev environment urls to new target site urls. Doesn’t have anything to do with 301 redirects. It’s about making sure the links on the new site are all correct and not pointing to the development site.

However, Daryl informed us the other day that if the developer is using backupbuddy, this will be taken care of automatically, so we are going to change the template to include the use of backupbuddy, going forward.

    Site Document

Im not sure if we are already delivering one of these, i tink we dont. It would be cool to deliver a pdf togheter with the site to each of the customers. Im not sure the format and how long we should take to write it, but could be:
-generic section with wordpress stuff (create page, post, categories, etc). This is easy and would be written once for all..
-custom section focusing on each customer’s site. For example, creating testimonials or updating gallery images.

I guess its easy to justify this expense to the client, adds value and will save a lot of q’s from them..

Good idea, Juan. Barb is perhaps (hopefully 🙂 our last client that will have a gallery!

We already send our clients to a free set of training videos on how to work with WordPress, at WP101.com. We give them our company sign in so they can go to the videos any time they want to see how to add / edit a page or post.

However, we don’t teach them how to edit sidebars (though the training area has that, I’m sure). We also have many people now using MailPoet for their email list building/newsletters. We have created some training for this for some clients, but this is something that we can add to this document you refer to. This should be added to our Workshop List — the Project Coordinators are going to start having workshops each Thursday to discuss how to continually improve. We also need to start having some for developers and also bringing you guys into our workshops as needed, so watch for that!

Quick question: is it possible to “subscribe” to posts/comments in this system? Id like to get mail notifications every time there is a reply/new post..

There should be, yes. Can you please log in to the admin area and then play with your user settings and see how you can do that? And when you figure it out, can you post the answer so that anyone else who wants to can do that?
